How we chose these cards

We evaluate every card on its real value for our community: clear rewards, honest costs, achievable approval requirements, and whether it accepts an ITIN or requires no credit history. Ratings are editorial and independent — no bank pays for a better rating.

Some issuers compensate us when you apply through our links, but that doesn't change which cards we recommend or how we rate them. If a card doesn't convince us, it doesn't appear here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a credit card without an SSN?

Yes. Several cards accept an ITIN instead of an SSN, especially secured cards like OpenSky. Some banks like Capital One and Chase also accept ITINs on certain products. Check each card's requirements before applying.

What is a secured card?

It's a card that requires a security deposit (for example $200) that becomes your credit limit. It works like any card and reports to the credit bureaus, making it the easiest way to build history from scratch. When you close the account or graduate to a regular card, the deposit comes back.

Does applying for a card lower my credit score?

An application creates a hard inquiry that can temporarily lower your score by about 5 points. That's why it pays to compare first and apply only to the card that fits you best, instead of applying to several at once.

What's the best card to start with?

If you have no history, a secured card with no annual fee (like Capital One Platinum Secured or Discover it Secured) is the best starting point. Use it for one small expense a month, pay it in full, and in 6 to 12 months you'll have history for rewards cards.
